Moisture reading

I have 2 sensors and both moisture readings seem off. How can one sensor read 80% and the other 63% and be dry? I also recently reset both max moistures and they are still inaccurate. There is also a sensors reading missing sensor data. Here’s the serial number on both units, 335EL4 - between properties, 336588 - front

Hi @Steveb1862 ,

Apologies for not getting back to you earlier. I meant to say the engineering team has reviewed your units and please leave your units intact in the meantime.

Since then, our engineering team managed to review your units so I’ll post the notes below.

There is no fixed moisture range that universally constitutes “DRY” or “WET” across all gardens. Because different soil types retain water differently, our AI learns your soil’s unique profile over time. It uses this ongoing learning to calculate and define the exact moisture percentages that constitute each level for your specific yard.

With our recent AI rollout, the system has determined that your respective moisture levels are now MOIST (80%) and DRY+ (70%). These new values will only be available in the upcoming app, which is being released soon.

Please let us know if this issue persists.

Thanks for your patience and support,

Hi @Steveb1862 ,

How’s everything looking now? Do you still need help with this or can we close this thread?

Thanks,

I haven’t noticed any changes. Here’s the current data.

Thanks for letting us know @Steveb1862 . In the meantime, please leave your units intact. We will review further on Monday.

Hi @Steveb1862 ,
Our team took a closer look at your data. Regarding the different and seemingly inaccurate readings (80% vs 63% while feeling dry), there are a few factors at play based on how GeoDrops calculates moisture for your specific soil conditions:

1. Soil Compaction Makes a Big Difference

Even if the sensors are relatively close to each other, soil compactness can vary. As mentioned in our guide on understanding soil moisture, compacted (hard) soil has fewer micro-pores to hold water compared to aerated (loose) soil. Because of this structural difference, it is normal to see a 15–20% variance between two spots.

2. Why High Percentages Might Still Be Dry

Because your soil type is clay, it naturally holds a high volume of water to begin with. However, because of how tightly clay binds to water, a 60% reading in clay soil is actually considered dry for the plants.

Hopefully, this helps clear up how those readings are calculated! We’ve also updated the algorithm that determines the moisture descriptions (like ‘dry’ or ‘moist’) in our upcoming app update. Keep an eye out for it, give it a try, and let us know if it helps!

thanks,

Leon

Hi

Thanks for getting back with me. I wasn’t concerned about the moisture difference between the two sensors. My only concern was the moisture reading didn’t seem accurate compared to the actual soil conditions. There were days where we received a lot of rain and the sensors didn’t seem to reflect that.

Thanks
Steve

Hi @Steveb1862 ,

We just rolled out a new cloud/ai/app update a couple of days ago that included several fixes and optimizations. Have you had a chance to tried it yet?

Please let us know if updating to this latest version has resolved the issue you were experiencing, or if you still think the moisture reading is inaccurate.

thanks,

Leon
