Important: How To Apply Silicone Grease On O-Ring

This is essential to protect the GeoDrops Droplet sensors from moisture damage (please read Warranty Policy for details). Make sure the silicone grease is applied after you have successfully paired the Droplet sensor with your mobile device, and that it enters Soil Detection Mode. This is done to minimize the loss of silicone grease as the battery cap is opened and closed.

For those of you who prefer text, here are the steps.

  1. Please remove the battery cap. The seal will feel tight as it’s designed to protect the electronics from moisture damage. If you have difficulty removing the cap, please use a flat head screwdriver to twist the cap open in the notch indicated here.

  1. Remove the O-ring from the slot. If you face difficulty doing so, please use a ballpoint pen to roll the O-ring out of the notch.

  1. Inspect the O-ring for damage. If the O-ring looks something like this, do not keep using as the moisture seal could be compromised. Please use the spare O-ring accompanied with the packaging.

  1. Cut open the silicone grease (similar to caulking tubes). You only need a bead the size of a rice grain or bean to adequately coat the O-ring.

  1. Apply the silicone grease with your fingertips by rubbing along the thickness of the O-ring to remove as much dust as possible.

  1. Once you have completed applying the silicone grease along the circumference, please put the battery cap back onto the device. Visually inspect the O-ring along the entire circumference on the battery cap to ensure there are no twists (see step 2’s photo for reference) before securing the bolts.

What would happen if dielectric compound was applied to both contacts of the batteries. Would that add any protection?

It’s not necessary to apply the silicone grease onto the batteries. Just the O-ring as it is crucial to the environmental seal.
