Readings and app

Hello,

My one out of the two sensors while it was working fine , now it shows limited reading in the 3.5 inch depth. After it was showing moist at 2.5 inches with 95% moist.I thought that maybe the batteries have issues. I change the batteries, I went through relocation of the sensor and max moisture mode and again the same. The batteries from 94% dropped to 48% in one minute. So, I realize, that every time you change even the depth focus the battery type changes. Also in the app, while I had the moisture set ball that I could set, now it disappeared.

Hi @loxias1821 ,

Sorry for the delayed response. Can you share the serial number of that particular device?

Hello,

So I have check the dirt that the sensor is placed and everything looks good. But, everything started out from the blue; it was working fine….

Thanks @loxias1821 .

Let us look into it further before getting back to you.

Hi - Did you install the device at a new location (as required per App instructions when you “move device”), or back into the same location (which is not recommended)?

Whenever you reinstall the device (at a new location), please also remember to click on either the “Move device” button or “relearn soil profile” button.

Please let us know if this helps solve your problem?

Thanks,
Lawrence

Hello,

The issue started all of the sudden without moving the sensor. After I removed it, and replace the batteries, I placed it in the same spot(after I prepared the soil), and I went through the “moved to a new location,” and max moisture modes. The issue with limited reading persists.

Hi @loxias1821 ,

Since your previous installation location was already disturbed, you will need to relocate the sensor further away (i.e. do not reinstall in the same location). ~1 foot away should be sufficient for locating undisturbed soil.

Please let us know if this helps,

Hello,

Thanks for the advice, but like I said I prepared the spot that was using previously with new dirt. I refuse to relocate the sensor, because after I have to buy plugs and repair the bold spot that created. My issue was, why it started acting weird at first point….. finally today it fixed it self, but I don’t know what the future brings.

Hi -

GeoDrops sensor works by physically contacting the soil, and a loose soil (even if it’s carefully prepared) tends to be relatively loose. Think about planting a new potted plant into the ground, it typically takes a few weeks for the soil to settle.

If you’re re-using an existing hole, you may need to wait for a few weeks for the soil to become “naturally dense again”. After waiting long enough, I’d also suggest clicking on “Re-learn soil profile” at that time, since the soil density has changed.

The multi-week long wait time for soil to settle is the reason why we don’t recommend putting the device back into the same hole.

Hope this helps!

Lawrence

Hello Lawrence,

Thanks for the tips. Ya I noticed that, especially after a lot of rain lately down here in FL it starts to settling. My question is , why it start acting weird and giving me limited readings in different depths even without bothering it?

HI @loxias1821 ,

Apologies for the late response. Here’s the short version of what’s happening.

Garden soil naturally shifts over time because it is a living ecosystem with roots, organisms, and animal activity. GeoDrops is designed to handle this better than most sensors, which often show disturbance weekly. With GeoDrops, disturbance is usually seen every one to two months and varies by soil type. In loamy or very healthy soil, this may happen slightly more often.

For more detail on the sensor design and how GeoDrops handles soil movement, see this deep‑dive video.

Hope this helps,
